Index.dat files
There are three index.dat files used by Internet Explorer, MSN Explorer and Maxthon:
 history index.dat
cookies index.dat
Temporary Internet Files index.dat
Index.dat files are used by Internet Explorer, MSN Explorer and Maxthon to store Internet history, Temporary Internet Files, cookies and other information about your Internet activity. Although index.dat files are useful, they can compromise your privacy as any person who has some knowledge about index.dat files and has access to your computer can see the history of your Internet activities. Index.dat files are system files and they can't be deleted manually as they are used by Windows all the time (index.dat files are locked by Windows). Their content is not deleted even if you clear browser history, Temporary Internet Files and cookies.
Using Clear All History you can easily clear the content of index.dat files or delete index.dat files at Windows startup
clear history index.dat
clear Temporary Internet Files index.dat
clear cookies index.dat
delete history index.dat
delete Temporary Internet Files index.dat

Double-click on Clear All History desktop icon
Click 'Tools' button in program toolbar.
Select What to Clear item.
Click 'Quick select' button.

Clear index.dat files
How to clear history index.dat:
• Double-click on Clear All History desktop icon
• Click 'Tools' button  in the toolbar.
• Select What to Clear -> Browser History item.
• Select your browser (Internet Explorer, MSN Explorer, Maxthon)
• Put the check mark next to 'history index.dat' in 'Clear index.dat files content' area.
• Click 'Clear All' button in program toolbar.

 Note: if your index.dat file is too large the process of clearing takes too much time. To escape this probelm you can set max size of index.dat file (MB) you want to be cleaned. Max size you can set for clearing is limited to 25 MB. If your index.dat file is large, you are recommended to delete it using 'Delete files at Windows startup' feature.
