What is the address bar history?

Address bar, also known as the Location bar, is a text box used to enter a web site address in a browser. Web browsers allow users to click the down arrow to view the recently visited pages. So, the address bar history shows some of the web sites you have recently visited and anyone who has access to your computer and starts typing in the address bar will get a drop down url list with the web sites you have visited.

How can I delete the address bar history in Internet Explorer?

Internet Explorer users can view the address bar history by clicking the down arrow on the far right side of the text box. To help keep the pages you have recently visited or searched for you can clear the address bar history.
To delete the address bar in Internet Explorer 7.0:
Select Tools and then Internet options.
Open the General tab.
In the Browsing history area click the Delete button.
To delete the list of web sites you have visited (delete the Address bar history), click Delete history and then click Yes.
Click Close and then click OK.

To delete the address bar history in Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x:
Go to Tools and select Internet Options.
Open the General tab, click Clear history.
Click OK.

Note: in Internet Explorer even if you delete address bar history manually, history file (index.dat file) stores information which can show where you have been online. This history file can't be deleted manually as it is used by Windows all the time.


How can I restore my missing Address Bar in Internet Explorer?

The Address bar may be missing in Internet Explorer 6.x if the Toolbar settings are set to remove the Address bar, or if there is a problem with a registry key.
To restore the missing address bar, you can change the Toolbar settings or delete the WebBrowser registry key.

To change the Toolbar settings:
Start Internet Explorer, click View and then point to Toolbars.
If there is not a check mark next to Address Bar, click Address Bar to place the check mark. If there is a check mark next to Address Bar, click Address Bar to remove the check mark, and then click Address Bar to place the check mark.
If the Address bar is in the upper right corner and not available, right-click Address, and then click Lock the Toolbar to remove the check mark.
Click Address, and then drag the Address bar where you want it.

If it doesn't work, you can delete the WebBrowser registry key.

To delete the WebBrowser registry key:
Click Start Select 'Run' from the 'Start' menu.
In the Run dialogue box type 'regedit' and click 'OK'.
Locate the following registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
Right-click the WebBrowser key, click Delete, and then click Yes.
Open Internet Explorer and then select View -> Toolbars. The toolbar default settings are restored.

How do I delete address bar history in Firefox?

To delete address bar history in Firefox 2.0:
Select Tools.
Select Options.
Select Privacy.
In Private area click Clear Now.
In Clear Private Data window put the check mark for Browsing history and click Clear Private Data Now.
Click OK.

To delete address bar history in Firefox 1.5:
Select Tools and Options.
Select Privacy.
Open History tab and click Clear Browsing history now.
Click OK.

In the History tab you can specify how long you want Firefox to remember what web sites you visited.

How do I delete the address bar history in Opera?

To delete address bar history (history of typed-in addresses) in Opera 9.x:
1. Open the Tools menu.
2. Select Delete private data.
3. Click the Details button
4. Select Clear history of typed-in addresses.
5. Click Delete button.

To delete visited links history in Opera 9.x:
1. Open the Tools menu.
2. Select Delete private data.
3. Click the Details button.
4. Select Clear history of visited links.
5. Click Delete button.
