Clear AutoComplete

AutoComplete stores information you entered on web pages when you fill web forms or search. So, when you start entering information again your browser suggests possible matches from entries you have typed before.

Most browsers allow you to choose the type of web form information that will retain and automatically fill in for you. You can choose whether the AutoComplete feature will remember web addresses, information that you fill out in web forms, or passwords.

For privacy purposes you may need to clear autocomplete history stored by your browser.

This article describes what autocomplete history is and how you can clear autocomplete history, disable or change the autocomplete settings in different browsers.

What is AutoComplete?

AutoComplete is a feature that stores a list of everything you type in web pages - it could be your personal information such as name, e-mail address, credit card information, or keywords you enter in search engines. AutoComplete helps the user complete a web form by suggesting possible matches - you can simply press the down arrow key and select the text without finishing typing. So anyone who has access to your computer can see a drop down list with information you have typed.

Why should I clear AutoComplete or disable AutoComplete (turn off AutoComplete)?

While the AutoComplete feature may be helpful for some things, it can also seriously compromise your security and privacy, as anyone who has access to your computer can see what web sites you visited and what information you entered on web pages. Also various malicious programs can use AutoComplete data to steal your personal information you have entered in web forms and retrieve passwords stored as autocomplete data.
